Tuna Thursday: Spartan Kitties!

Meow! We. Are. Sparta! (L-R: Charlotte, Oreo, Beethoven)

Welcome to another Tuna Thursday blog, where I SHAMELESSLY EXPLOIT my three cats, Oreo, Beethoven, and Charlotte and provide further evidence to the world that I am a self-indulgent Crazy Cat Lady who posts too many photos of her cats on the Internets. :)

I’m sure you have heard of this hilarious website (and book) called PETS WHO WANT TO KILL THEMSELVES. The website is here: http://petswhowanttokillthemselves.com/

I’m bummed that my cats have NOT yet been featured on this website. I dress them up all the time!

Would you like to see our crazy Halloween pictures from last year? Sure, I know I’m jumping the gun because it’s only June, but remember… I gotta post a cat blog every Thursday! And I’m on a script deadline for EUREKA right now, so my brain is a little fried. :)

(Keep reading after the jump for crazy cat costume pictures! LOL!)

Writer Wednesday: Meet DAVID YOO!

THE DETENTION CLUB by David Yoo (Balzer & Bray/HarperCollins 2011)

Welcome to WRITER WEDNESDAY! Today’s blog is all about my baby bro DAVID YOO. He is the author of two acclaimed YA novels (GIRLS FOR BREAKFAST/Delacorte ’05 and STOP ME IF YOU’VE HEARD THIS ONE BEFORE/Hyperion ’08). His debut middle grade novel, THE DETENTION CLUB, hit bookstores on June 21, 2011 from Balzer + Bray. David’s story, “A Fistful of Feathers,” is also available as an e-Book from all major retailers June 7, 2011. His first collection of adult essays comes out from Grand Central this spring 2012. For more information on David and his upcoming DETENTION CLUB book blog tour, go here: http://daveyoo.com

By the way, if the book cover art looks familiar, that’s because it was done by illustrator/author/animator DAN SANTAT. He was a Guest Author for my 2011 National Picture Book Writing Week (NaPiBoWriWee). You can read more about Dan at his interview on my NaPiBoWriWee blog here: http://paulayoo.com/napi/?p=250

THE DETENTION CLUB has gotten rave reviews so far. PUBLISHERS WEEKLY said: “Peter and Drew’s antics will keep readers laughing, as readers will be entertained by the boys’ hijinks and empathize with their desire to fit in.” And according to The Bulletin of the Center For Children’s Books, “Readers familiar with Yoo’s YA work will be delighted and surprised by his first foray into middle-grade fiction.”

I asked David to explain the plot of THE DETENTION CLUB. He said: “The title is so explain-y that to say anything more about it would give away the ending, but I will say, briefly, that it’s the story of two friends, who-”

Okay. So in case you need more info on his book, here’s the official story: “Detention: The best worst thing to happen to Peter Lee? Peter and his best friend, Drew, used to be so cool (or, at least, not total outcasts) in elementary school. But now they’re in middle school, where their extensive mica collection and prowess at kickball have earned them a new label: losers. Then Peter attracts the unwanted attention of the school bullies, and his plan to become popular through his older sister, the practically perfect Sunny, backfires. Things go from bad to worse when Peter gets detention. But what at first seems to spell his utter doom turns into an unlikely opportunity for making friends and influencing people…”

David took time out of his busy schedule to answer a few questions. (Keep reading after the jump to find out more about my baby bro!)

TV Tuesday: The Play’s The Thing!

Time for another "Writer Wednesday" blog!

“To become a playwright, you should be a [person] with imagination and common sense, to begin with. You must be observant. You must never be satisfied with superficial knowledge. You must have patience to search for causes. You must have a sense of balance and good taste. You should know economy, psychology, sociology. You can learn these things with patience and hard work – and if you do not learn them, no approach will make a good playwright of you.” Laos Egri, The Art of Dramatic Writing, p. 278

Welcome to Writer Wednesday! Today’s blog is about writing stage plays. Now why would a TV writer blog about plays? Because I’m trying to write one! :) So I figured I’d share my experience so far for those of you who are aspiring TV writers interested in learning more behind-the-scenes stuff about the working life of a TV writer.

When I first started out in TV, I learned that TV shows are a direct descendent of plays. It began with on the stage, moved to radio, and ended up on TV. Today, the Internet is where a lot of original storytelling can be found. But it all traces back to ole Will and the stage play. TV shows, like stage plays and radio, are all about the language. The story is told through words – i.e. DIALOGUE.

We saw Rush at the Gibson theatre in Universal City, CA on Monday June 22, 2011!

Welcome to Music Monday! Today’s blog is all about RUSH! We saw RUSH perform at the Gibson Ampitheatre in Universal City, CA last Monday June 22nd. It was an AMAZING concert!

I first heard of Rush in the 7th grade when MOVING PICTURES came out. I fell in love with that album. See, I started my love affair with prog rock at a tender young age! LOL! :) I quickly devoured their other albums, including the totally awesome 2112!

Foodie Friday: Philippe’s!

Best. Meal. Ever. At. Philippe's!

Welcome to FOODIE FRIDAY! Today’s blog is all about a favorite LA institution – PHILIPPE’S!

We recently had a hankering for some French dipped sandwiches at Philippe’s, which is a famous LA eatery located in downtown Los Angeles. I took a photo of our meal and decided it would be the perfect Foodie Friday blog to wax rhapsodic about this yummy, yummy food! :)

To find out more about Philippe’s, go here: http://www.philippes.com/

Philippe’s started in 1908 by Philippe Mathieu. He accidentally created the “French dip” sandwich in 1918 when he dropped a sliced French roll into a roasting pan filled with juice drippings. His customer, a police officer, said he would eat the sandwich anyway. The dish was so delicious that the policeman returned the next day with some buddies, asking for Philippe to make the sandwich the same way by dipping the bread in the pan drippings!

The Food Network and The Cooking Channel have done specials on Philippe’s where the staff shows how they make the roast beef. It’s this incredibly complicated process that take days to cut up all the vegetables, roast the meat, and create the “jus” for the dip.

Now some folks claim the original French dip was created at another famous LA institution called COLE’S. Their website is here: http://colesfrenchdip.com/ I have not been to Cole’s yet, but I definitely plan to check them out and blog about their French Dip, too. Hmmm…. maybe I’ll do a taste test! :) Stay tuned!

The photo above features what we always order at Philippe’s. We like to order the roast beef French dip. You have to ask for it “double dipped” if you want both bread slices dipped in the “jus.” OMG. It is so good! I always order mine with blue cheese. We also like the lamb dip too. We also love the cole slaw, the chili, and the pickled eggs. We also pour a ton of their homemade-from-scratch spicy mustard over everything! It’s a lot of food but worth it.

Okay, the down side to writing Foodie Friday blogs is that I am always starving at the end! Hmmm… maybe I should go to Philippe’s now… see ya! :)

######

Thanks for checking out my Foodie Friday blog! For those of you who have been to both Philippe’s and Cole’s, what’s your verdict on the sandwiches? For those of you outside of LA, what are your favorite sandwich places in your hometown? I look forward to your comments. Until next week’s blogs… Happy Writing! WRITE LIKE YOU MEAN IT! :)

Tuna Thursday: Cats and Chairs!

Filed under: Pets — Tags: — paulayoo @ 8:45 am

Oreo, Beethoven, & Charlotte settle down in their favorite new chair for this week's Tuna Thursday blog!

Welcome to TUNA THURSDAY! So every week, I worry that I’ve run out of blog ideas for this cat-oriented subject. This week, I was like, hmmm, so far I’ve posted pictures of my cats sleeping, cats with my computer… what else can I post?

And then a friend had an awesome chair he needed to give away because they are redecorating their house. We need a new cool reading chair, so I said we would take his chair.

My friend delivered the chair last week to our house. It’s pictured above. And who IMMEDIATELY came over to make the chair home? Oreo, Beethoven and Charlotte of course.

This got me thinking… my three cats LOVE chairs. They are always taking over the chairs in our house. So I started downloading all the photos I have my cats in chairs, and the evidence was overwhelming. Yes. I have enough information collected to write an entire blog on… CATS AND CHAIRS. :)

Writer Wednesday: Inspirational Novelist & Teacher Phyllis Gebauer

Phyllis Gebauer (photo credit LA Times/UCLA Extension)

Welcome to WRITER WEDNESDAY. Today’s blog is a sad one. Over the weekend, I received an email from the UCLA Extension Writers’ Program, where I teach a children’s writing course. It turns out one of our instructors, acclaimed novelist and teacher PHYLLIS GEBAUER, had passed away.

I was devastated to hear the news. Phyllis Gebauer was the first teacher to encourage me to pursue writing a novel. So I wanted to devote today’s blog to Phyllis and her career and how she influenced me with her teaching. (For more info, go to her website here: http://phyllisgebauer.com/)

(NOTE: From The LA Times: “The above photo, taken in 1965, is from the Southern California period: a pig piñata they named Claude, Thomas Pynchon standing behind the door, flashing a peace sign, and Phyllis Gebauer, having a ball.” From The LA Times/UCLA Extension)

TV Tuesday: Behind the Scenes of The West Wing!

Me & Aaron Sorkin on the set of The West Wing (except Sorkin is writing, so I had to settle for his chair instead! LOL!)

Welcome to TV TUESDAY! I recently received a LOVELY email from a teen reader who not only enjoyed my YA novel GOOD ENOUGH (HarperCollins) but was also a huge West Wing fan. She asked me some great questions, and it got me thinking… hey, I should post a fun behind-the-scenes blog on my time as a staff writer on THE WEST WING!

So today’s TV TUESDAY blog will feature some fun on-the-set photos of THE WEST WING. You’ll be surprised to see what our sets look like compared to the real White House. We had some producers on staff who had worked at the White House, and they all said our set was much bigger than the real deal. LOL! :) For more on info on The West Wing, go here: http://www.nbc.com/The_West_Wing/

Harvey Danger

Welcome to Music Mondays! I have a special treat for you this week! I had brunch this weekend with a long-time friend, JEFF LIN, who just happens to be the guitarist for HARVEY DANGER! Yup, the band who had the hugely famous hit single, “Flagpole Sitta.”

I’ve always been a Harvey Danger fan – their music is smart, quirky, witty, and extremely catchy. They also rock hard live in concert!
