Writer Wednesday: The Artist’s Way

The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron

Welcome to Writer Wednesday! This is where I either post Q&As with guest authors or blog about writing craft issues for novels and children’s picture books and TV writing.

This is a short blog because I’ve actually been WRITING! :) I’ve also been curious about the famous “Artist’s Way” books by Julia Cameron. I know tons of people love her books and swear by her methods, while others roll their eyes and dismiss her books as too “New Age”-y.

As for me, I love new projects. :) So I figured, out of curiosity, I’d try reading her books and see if they can keep me inspired as I write. I write all the time, and I can sometimes get burned out from all that hard work. So I’m addicted to writing books. I think they’re fun. :) I started reading her books and realized it wasn’t fair for cynics (including myself) to dismiss her work as New Age-y. She actually brings up some important points about the creative process that I found extremely enlightening.

TV Tuesday: Eureka/Yooreka Forever!

EUREKA on SyFy

Today’s TV Tuesday blog is a special blog dedicated to Eureka!

I started working on EUREKA in 2009 as a Co-Producer during Season 4.0 and 4.5. I am currently a Producer on this fun show for its 5th season. EUREKA is a fun drama series about a secret town of scientific geniuses who work on classified government projects. Of course, something is always going awry with some genius’ experiment, and it’s up to our hero Sheriff Jack Carter to save the day. Ironically, Carter is NOT a genius, but his common sense and Everyman sensibilities helps him see the forest for the trees, unlike our detail-obsessed scientists.

To read about our behind-the-scenes life in the EUREKA writers’ room go to our blog here:

It has been a pleasure and a privilege to write for this wonderful TV series. Everyone from the writing staff to the cast and crew and our post-production team and network have been like a family. It’s been a blast working for this show. I also am humbled by the fan response – I have met (online or in real life) many Eureka fans… you guys ROCK! :) As a huge sci-fi fan, I’m excited to have finally written for a sci-fi show that is also family friendly and promotes a multicultural cast of diverse and authentic characters.

Tuna Thursday: Beethoven & Charlotte’s Adoption Day One-Year Anniversary!

Filed under: Pets — Tags: — paulayoo @ 8:45 am

August 1, 2010: The day I adopted Beethoven and Charlotte!

Hi! After a summer hiatus where I was swamped with job deadlines, I’m back to blogging on a more regular schedule. And as promised, here’s the latest TUNA THURSDAY blog where I blog self-indulgently about my three cats Oreo, Beethoven, and Charlotte. For some reason, this is my most popular blog. Hmmm! :)

Today’s blog, as promised from a few weeks ago, is an Adoption Day anniversary blog commemorating the one-year anniversary date of when we adopted Beethoven and Charlotte! (Adoption Day was August 1, 2010).

Long story short: I adopted my first cat Oreo on April 15, 2008. He was my schmoopie pie for two amazing years. He was such a curious, loveable cat. But I noticed he seemed lonely, and I read about how important it can be for indoor cats to have playmates so they don’t get too bored and restless. Our cat sitter, Ginger, who is also a licensed veterinarian technician, had rescued two kittens who were the only ones who survived a litter that was born in an apartment garage. (You may remember Ginger from a previous TUNA THURSDAY blog here: http://paulayoo.com/blog/?p=700) She started texting pictures and emails of these two kittens. She felt we would be the best parents for these kittens. After a few months of hesitation (THREE cats? I wasn’t sure I could handle it…), we caved in and agreed to meet Beet and Char on August 1, 2010. And the rest is history…

Writer Wednesday: 2011 SCBWI Conference & NaPiBoWriWee Wrap Up!

Time for another "Writer Wednesday" blog!

Hi! Welcome to WRITER WEDNESDAY. I know it’s been a few weeks but better late than never… here is my wrap up blog about the 2011 Society of Children Book Writers & Illustrators (SCBWI) national conference!

As many of you know, my life has been pretty crazy busy as I help wrap up our fifth and final season of EUREKA which airs Mondays at 8 PM on SyFy. (I’m a Producer on this show). So I had to go on a “blog vacation” this summer and haven’t had a chance to post my weekly daily-themed blogs.

Fortunately, I’m back! So for this week’s WRITER WEDNESDAY blog, I figured I would FINALLY post pictures from the annual SCBWI conference. Because of my schedule, I was not able to attend the conference. Instead, I stopped by over the weekend to see some friends and reunite with some of the wonderful writers who participated in my annual National Picture Book Writing Week (aka “NaPiBoWriWee”). (NaPiBoWriWee blog here: http://paulayoo.com/napi/ and info here: http://paulayoo.com/napi/?p=11)

Typeface Tuesday: New Guest Author Q&As Coming Soon!

Welcome to Typeface Tuesday!

Welcome to TYPEFACE TUESDAY! I know, Tuesdays are usually TV TUESDAYs, but given my insane EUREKA schedule and the fact that I wrote a TV-oriented blog yesterday called MEDIA MONDAY about the August 22nd airdate of my latest episode, “Clash of the Titans,” I thought I’d rename Tuesday’s blog to fit today’s theme. :) But don’t worry, TV Tuesdays will return. (See, my blog is exciting, huh? You never know what to expect… there are surprises from time to time!)

Anyway, today’s blog is an official announcement of some future Guest Author Q&As you can look forward to… stay tuned for future interviews with the three following amazing authors. FYI, although I am a published kid lit author, I love to read other genres as well, including poetry, adult literary fiction, and narrative non-fiction. So check out the variety of Q&A blogs I have lined up! :)

The author lineup includes SONYA SONES, SHEELA CHARI, SCOTT MARTELLE and SUSAN WHITALL.

Media Monday: “Clash of the Titans” – My Eureka Episode Airs Tonight!

Me & Eureka special guest star Wallace Shawn taking a break on the set of "Clash of the Titans," co-written by Eric Tuchman & Paula Yoo!

Hi! I hope everyone is having a great summer. I’ve been on a blog “vacation” because of my work schedule. I normally try to do daily blogs with themes (including Music Mondays, TV Tuesdays, Writer Wednesdays, Tuna Thursdays, and Foodie Fridays) but I’ve been rather busy lately with my job as Producer on the SyFy series EUREKA.

Today, instead of a MUSIC MONDAY blog, I’m hosting a MEDIA MONDAY blog to talk about my show Eureka because we’ve been in the news lately. :P As many of you know, we were quite the breaking news and media firestorm this month due to the untimely announcement that we would not be getting a sixth season renewal. Instead, our show’s fifth and final season will air some time next year. We are wrapping up production on the fifth season this summer and moving on to hopeful new jobs on other fun TV shows. It has been such an honor and privilege – as well as a ton of fun! – working for this wonderful TV drama series. :)

But I am not going to blog or dwell upon the sad news that our series EUREKA will be coming to a close. :( Instead, I want to focus on the fun and positive exciting news that WE STILL HAVE SEVERAL EPISODES LEFT OF OUR CURRENT SEASON 4.5! And we also have an amazing Season 5.0 that will air next year. So Eureka’s not done yet – we still have TONS of NEW EPISODES airing between now and next year. :)

In fact, my latest Eureka episode, “CLASH OF THE TITANS,” airs tonight, Monday August 22, 2011 at 8 PM on SyFy. This episode was co-written with the amazing co-executive producer ERIC TUCHMAN. It’s about romance and uh, poison (hmmmm!) and it features special guest star WALLACE SHAWN (of “Princess Bride” and “My Dinner With Andre” fame!). Our show is followed by Warehouse 13 at 9 PM and Alphas at 10 PM. It’s a powerful Monday lineup on SyFy! :) (Preview video of my episode here: http://video.syfy.com/shows/eureka/v1347183)
