The Glorious Pasta of Italy by Domenica Marchetti (Chronicle Books 2011)

Welcome to FOODIE FRIDAY! October is officially DOMENICA MARCHETTI month! Every Friday in October, we’ll be featuring a Foodie Friday blog devoted to food critic/journalist/cook/author Domenica Marchetti. Today features a special recipe from Domenica’s book. (If you missed Part 1 & 2 of our Q&A with here, here are the links: http://paulayoo.com/blog/?p=1014 and http://paulayoo.com/blog/?p=1025)

I worked with Domenica when we were both reporters for The Detroit News back in the early ’90s. Since then, Domenica has gone on to write for The Washington Post and publish several acclaimed cookbooks.

We are also hosting a signed book giveaway contest with Domenica. Please comment on this blog (or on any Foodie Friday blog this month) and you will automatically be included in the prize drawing. Or you can email me at paula at paulayoo dot com to join the drawing. A winner will be picked at random and will receive a signed copy of Domenica’s latest book, THE GLORIOUS PASTA OF ITALY (Chronicle Books 2011). The winner will be announced on Friday October 28, 2011.

Foodie Friday: Good Enough SPAM SUSHI Recipe!

Spam, Spam, Spam and More Spam! (The Kind You Eat! LOL!)

Welcome to FOODIE FRIDAY! This week, we are celebrating the paperback release of my YA novel GOOD ENOUGH (HarperCollins ’08). The paperback version was released on June 7, 2011. So all my blogs this week have been GOOD ENOUGH-oriented.

How does food relate to GOOD ENOUGH? In a word… SPAM. Yes, SPAM is featured quite a bit in my novel. Why? Koreans. Love. SPAM. Just check out this article for more info:

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/nationworld/2002565698_spam17.html

In my novel, the main character, Patti Yoon, is always eating SPAM-dishes created by her mom. This was based on growing up myself and eating lots of SPAM at home. To this day, I still love SPAM and will eat it with kimchee fried rice and a fried egg. Yum! :)

There are three SPAM recipes included in my novel. I’m featuring one of them today – “SPAM Kimbap (AKA Spam Sushi Rolls)”!

(Keep reading after the jump for the recipe and pictures of the SPAM sushi rolls!)

Foodie Friday: All About Tomatoes!

Welcome to Foodie Fridays!

Welcome to another FOODIE FRIDAY! I’m a total foodie fanatic. I think I spend more time watching cooking shows on TV than I do writing. :) I also LOVE cooking. (My fantasy food TV show would be called “ARE YOO HUNGRY?” LOL!)

This week’s blog is all about our garden. We had bought a house a few years ago. The backyard had a sandbox for the previous owner’s children and dogs. We ended up getting rid of the sand and turning it into a garden…

From sandbox to bountiful garden!

We grew so many tomatoes, I swear we could have set up a small stand at a local farmers’ market and made money off these tomatoes. LOL! I LOVED growing our own tomatoes. You don’t realize how “chemical” they taste at your regular supermarket because they’re often forced to ripen at an artificial rate due to mass distribution/transportation. Eating tomatoes from our garden was an amazing experience – they actually tasted like REAL tomatoes. The difference was like night and day between our garden tomatoes and the ones we bought at our local supermarket.

One summer, we decided to make homemade marinara sauce from our overly abundant garden.

(Keep reading after the jump to see how we made homemade marinara sauce from scratch!)
