The Great Deceivers, a King Crimson Tribute Band!

Welcome to Music Monday! I took a week vacation from blogging last week because I was busy at COMIC CON 2011 in San Diego for our show EUREKA (Mondays 8 PM SyFy). Stay tuned for a ComicCon wrap-up blog for tomorrow’s TV Tuesday blog. But now I’m back to our regularly scheduled programming of Music Monday, TV Tuesday, Writer Wednesday, Tuna Thursday, and Foodie Friday! :)

Today’s Music Monday blog is about my band, a King Crimson tribute band called THE GREAT DECEIVERS. We have a gig this Sunday July 31st at Alva’s Showroom in San Pedro at 4 PM.

Music Monday: How Do You Get to Carnegie Hall? PRACTICE!

My two favorite things in the world (besides my cats of course): my 1902 French Maxim Angard violin and Bartlett Bear!

Happy Fourth of July! And… welcome to Music Monday! Today I just wanted to share with you a blog about my practice sessions. In a nutshell, I started playing the violin in kindergarten. When I say I’m “classically trained,” that’s just a fancy way of saying I took years and years of violin lessons. :) Right now, I haven’t had time to take violin lessons, so I just practice on my own to keep my chops up. Playing the violin is like being an athlete – you have to work out on a regular basis or your muscles can go slack!

Because I’m working full-time as a TV writer/producer and also as a book author, it’s hard for me to find enough time to practice on a regular basis. I haven’t had a chance to do any classical music chamber concerts in awhile, either. The last couple recitals I did were a few years ago when I performed Dvorak’s Romance in f minor for Violin & Piano and Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio in d minor with some friends. I hope one day to do another classical chamber music recital, but I’ll have to wait until I’m on a TV hiatus. I sometimes play with the Torrance Symphony Orchestra, so that’s my only other classical music outlet. I love playing with my rock bands, but my first love is always classical music. :)

Music Monday: “Is Mendelssohn ‘Good Enough’?”

Me at age 7. Look at that perfect technique! LOL!

Me today with my Fender electric violin! Rock on! :)

Welcome to my first MUSIC MONDAY blog! As many of you know, I’m a huge music fan as well as a musician.  I listen to everything – and I play everything on my violin – from classical to rock to country to prog rock to punk rock. :) I’ve played, recorded, or toured with dozens of bands, including NO DOUBT, SPIRITUALIZED, ARTHUR LEE of LOVE, BIRD YORK, DILLON CAMPBELL, THE DILETTANTES, RANDOM AOK, BUCK MCCOY, EMMA BURGESS, LISTING SHIP, WAIT THINK FAST, BRIGHT BLUE GORILLA, and THE NOW PEOPLE. (For more on my music bio, you can go here: http://paulayoo.com/music.html)

I figured I’d start off each week with a fun music blog. These blogs may be super short, like a link to my favorite Duran Duran guilty pleasure song :) or something more substantial, like my musings on American Idol. :) LOL!

Today’s blog is about some of the music that was referenced in my YA novel GOOD ENOUGH (HarperCollins). This book was published in hardcover in 2008. The paperback edition is out this June 7, 2011! I plan to post several Music Monday blogs about the music featured in this novel as we near the paperback release date! The music ranges from Bach to The Sex Pistols, to give you an idea of the variety of music I love! :) For today’s blog, I’m going to focus on the classical pieces mentioned in this book…
