Foodie Friday: The Order of the Omnivores! (Fri 10/9/09)
Welcome to another Foodie Friday. Keep reading to find out about my friend's amazing new foodie blog, THE ORDER OF THE OMNIVORES. (Note: My friend created this hilarious Simpsons portrait of himself!)
So far, this weekly column has been a lot of fun to write. I hadn't realized how much cooking we do at home! I still have many more recipes to blog about, but I decided this week to promote my friend ML Compton's new blog called "THE ORDER OF THE OMNIVORES."
The link is here: http://theorderoftheomnivores.blogspot.com/
ML is a very dear friend of mine. We share a lot of things in common - a love for original punk rock music from the early '80s and all things having to do with food and wine. He's a very cool dude - very funny, witty, and intellectual (but far from pretentious) and very down to earth. Here's his bio from his blog:
"Raised in Southern California. Spent my last 2 years of school in Virginia where I discovered sex, drugs and rock & roll. Moved back to Orange County and then moved to the San Fernando Valley. Started working in record stores at age 18. Got loosely involved in the LA punk scene under the name Jett. Started managing bands (The Furys, the Zeros, BPeople). Met Skip in 1979. Twenty-nine years later, we're still together. Met Lydia Lunch and flirted with performance art. Appeared in the R. Kern film "Fingered" before deciding I wasn't suited for that kind of thing. Tried playing in bands (Jes Grew, Sprout Mountain, Some Black Woman). Started working for bands as tour and/or business manager: Three O'clock, Redd Kross, Choir Invisible, Thin White Rope, Poster Children, The Young Fresh Fellows, Dharma Bums, the Walkabouts, Seam, Congo Norvell, Chance The Gardener, Belgian group Nemo, Australian group Underground Lovers and Graves Brothers Deluxe but I couldn't stand the label apathy and fled the business altogether. Became the head buyer of the Rhino Records store and then left after several years due to circumstances. Now I raise money by selling things on the internet."
You must bookmark ML's blog. Although his professional background is in the music industry, his constant touring with bands everywhere influenced his taste buds. He became quite the connoisseur of food and wine, thanks to being exposed to some of the greatest restaurants all over the world. His blog provides a great in-depth look at food trends and hot topics in the foodie world. He's extremely knowledgeable and quite the expert. Plus, he's a wonderful writer and I love reading his columns. I personally think he found his new calling with this amazing foodie blog!
ML, his husband Skip, and our friends John and Diane, often emailed each other with funny stories we found on the Internet about food (we're obsessed with photos of the worst fried food offerings from state fairs!) and wine and recipes and cool restaurants and FOODTV gossip. So I decided we should start archiving our emails and forming a little group. So I created a private google groups for us called "The Order of the Omnivores." That in turn inspired ML to create his blog, "The Order of the Omnivores." We feel like we are a secret society. All we need are robes and special magical wands like in Harry Potter. LOL!
Some of the topics we discussed recently in our group included:
-- There will be a new TV network like FOODTV called "THE COOKING CHANNEL." The news link is here: http://www.mediaweek.com/mw/content_display/news/cable-tv/e3id1aae9d6b9dc26053217fe0997d747b2
--Cupcake cars! What will think of next? http://www.slashgear.com/neiman-marcus-cupcake-cars-bring-burning-man-mayhem-to-the-deep-pocketed-0759535/
-- The demise (sob) of GOURMET Magazine: http://gawker.com/5377126/gourmets-dead-dont-blame-the-internet?skyline=true&s=i
-- An in-depth and interesting article about celebrity chef Jamie Oliver trying to educate Americans about staying away from junk food and cooking more at home: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/11/magazine/11Oliver-t.html?_r=1
So I thought I'd share with you my little private group of friends and how we obsess about food-related topics all week online! Check out ML's blog as soon as you can! Stay tuned for next week's Foodie Friday where we'll take a closer look at more fun food recipes experimented with at the Yoo household! Until then, I'm back in the writing batcave. Happy Eating!

Thanks Paula. I've been distracted lately due to finances, but I hope I get back to updating both my blogs regularly within the next few weeks. I would really like to get back to my original weekly schedule. Keep your fingers crossed.

You're welcome! I had been meaning to brag about your blog earlier. Maybe this will help inspire you as you prepare to return to weekly blogging once everything is less chaotic! xo Paula
