On the Road - May 13

Greetings from Cincinnati, Ohio! I'm on my second-to-last day of the Good Enough Book Tour! Here's a recap of events, including a review of my first time experience eating Cincinnati's famous "Three Way Skyline Chili"! Laughing(Bartlett pictured below enjoying it!)

Monday May 12th:  After doing a radio and TV interview in Ft. Thomas, KY and Cincinnati, OH, I made my way back to Ft. Thomas, KY to meet the wonderful booksellers of the famous indie children's bookstore, The Blue Marble Books bookstore. Check out there website here: THE BLUE MARBLE.

I had a great time chatting with the booksellers and signing some books for their store. They included a yummy spread of sushi in their beautiful meeting room that was inspired by the classic children's book GOOD NIGHT MOON:

Thank you Blue Marble! Smile

Then I drove back to Cincinnati to do an interview with Debba Haupert, who started the amazing and positive girl power website Girlfriendology back in 2006. I highly recommend bookmarking this great site which promotes friendship and other fun and positive girl power themes! You can check out the video interview and link to her awesome website here:

Thanks Debba! Here's a nice photo of us after the interview:

I then did a signing at the very cool indie bookstore Joseph-Beth Booksellers in Cinncinati.

Here's a picture of me and Barb (in charge of books/PR) at the store:

Then I drove home, EXHAUSTED from my very loooong but super fun day in Ohio and Kentucky!

Tuesday May 13th:

Another busy day! Met Barb from Joseph-Beth Booksellers for a school presentation at the Cincinnati School for the Creative & Performing Arts.

Super cool and hip creative writing teacher Joy Fuller arranged this presentation along with Joseph-Beth Booksellers & Barb. I gave a lecture/performance to a group of music and writing students in the 5th through 8th grades where I talked about how I became a writer, how GOOD ENOUGH was published, and played some violin for the students as well (my usual mix of classical Mendelssohn mixed with Led Zep, Foo Fighters, and hip hop!)  The kids were, as always, very attentive, polite, enthusiastic, and fortunately laughed at my jokes. WinkThey also asked very smart questions. Before my presentation, I got a little lost in the hallways of the gigantic school and was lucky enough to hear the tail end of their school orchestra rehearsing, plus a jazz band rehearsal. OMG, these kids are AMAZING!!!! This school reminds me of that movie FAME - these kids are gonna be SUPER STARS!!!!!

Afterwards, Bartlett and I decided to surprise visit the Cincinnati Public Library's "Teen Spot" books section. Go here to their link: http://teenspace.cincinnatilibrary.org/

They had written a great review of GOOD ENOUGH on their TeenSpot website (link is here: http://www.cincinnatilibrary.org/spotlight/feature.asp?id=9749). I met two staffers, librarian Amanda and Cinn. Librarian Veteran Renee who found a copy of my book to sign! Yay for public libraries!!! Support yours!!!! SmileMoney mouth

Before I drove back to my hotel in Dayton, I had to try the very famous Cincinnati local food called "Skyline Chili." I went to Skyline Chili on 643 Vine St. Check out their website here: http://www.skylinechili.com/

In my novel GOOD ENOUGH, the main character Patti's mother makes her a lot of food with SPAM in it. It's an immigrant thing. WinkSo I thought it was fascinating that Skyline Chili was invented by a Greek immigrant's son. It's this amazing chili that has a unique spicy flavor (I detected some cinnamon and chocolate!) and it's poured over spaghetti. The "3 Way" is chili and cheese on top of spaghetti. The "4 way" includes either onions or red beans. The "5 Way" includes both onions and red beans.

I wanted the classic "3 Way." In order to eat it properly, the super cool waitress gave me a plastic bib because the chili's hot and tends to splatter. Here's me about to dig into my "3 Way"! Tongue outThe verdict? I LOOOOOOVED IT! IT WAS SO DELICIOUS!!!!!!!!

Now I'm back blogging live from my hotel in Dayton. About to get ready to sign books at Books & Co. in Dayton, so stop on by at 7 p.m.! Hope to see you there! Tomorrow, I'll be speaking at the Dayon Library and then I'm flying back to LA. I'll post a final blog when I return home plus I will finally get those tour photo galleries set up in the Picture Gallery section of my website. Until then, thanks for reading and commenting on my live blogs and hope you've had fun being "on the road" with me! Cool

Paula, Your visit to the Blue Marble in Fort Thomas, Ky. was great. I wish Bartlett could have seen the Great Green Room from Goodnight Moon. He would have been cute sitting on the Bunny's lap. I loved the enthusiasm you had for your book and your writing. I know you got a lot of students in this part of the country jazzed about writing just from listening to you talk about your work. Please visit us again.

Hi Chris! Thanks again to everyone at the awesome Blue Marble - I had so much fun in Ft. Thomas and it was so inspiring to be among all those great books - what an amazing selection at your store. I did take a couple pics of Bartlett outside the Blue Marble and will post it for a picture gallery next week, but darn, you are right, Bartlett in the Green Room would have been SOOO CUTE!  xo Paula

Paula, my former in-laws were from outside of Cincinnati. Unfortunately, I never got to experience the Three-Way Chili.

You look adorable in that bib!

Eileen

Hey Eileen, well, I think we should pull a Thelma and Louise road trip (hahaha) go back to Cincy for the Three Way Chili! We'll wear matching bibs. LOL! Tongue out
