Music gigs, writing deadlines, and kittens, oh my!

My band, the Great Deceivers, is a King Crimson tribute band! (http://myspace.com/tgdkingcrimson)

(EDITED SUNDAY MAY 15, 2011 AT 11:30 AM: MY KING CRIMSON GREAT DECEIVERS GIG TODAY HAS BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO ILLNESS. STAY TUNED FOR FUTURE RESCHEDULED DATE. THANKS! — Paula)

Well, hello! I’m still recovering from a successful – but exhausting – 3rd annual National Picture Book Writing Week (aka “NaPiBoWriWee”) at my secondary blog (https://paulayoo.com/napi). In addition, I had a lot of last minute work deadlines at my job as producer on EUREKA on SyFy, rehearsals for a gig this Sunday with my band The Great Deceivers, AND I had a kitten emergency! Oh noes!

(Keep reading after the jump for this week’s updates and news… and NOTE: For those of you who signed up to comment on my NaPiBoWriWee blog at https://paulayoo.com/napi – if you want to post a comment on this blog, you have to register a separate account. Sorry for the inconvenience!)

National Picture Book Writing Week - NaPiBoWriWee - 2011!

As many of you know, I run the annual National Picture Book Writing Week (aka “NaPiBoWriwee”) on my website. This year’s event was another smashing success. I posted three daily blogs at 9 AM, Noon, and 10 PM featuring writing craft advice, interviews with special guest authors, and progress reports. The NaPiBoWriWee community was wonderful and I had a blast bonding with everyone as we attempted to write 7 picture books in 7 days. The purpose of this event was simply to promote awareness of picture book writing and to help aspiring (and veteran!) writers to stop procrastinating! 🙂

For more info on NaPiBoWriWee, go here: https://paulayoo.com/napi/?p=11

I will post a couple of follow-up blogs on the NaPiBoWriWee link (https://paulayoo.com/napi) in the next couple weeks, but after that, I’ll be posting full-time HERE at my main blog (https://paulayoo.com/blog). So please keep visiting for future weekly blogs! I’m still trying to figure out a system of how and when to blog about what. LOL! 🙂

I am producer for the show EUREKA which airs on SyFy!

After NaPiBoWriWee ended, I was super busy at my regular job as a Producer on the dramedy series EUREKA on SyFy. It’s my second season with the show. I started as Co-Producer for its fourth season. My first script for this show was the Eureka/Warehouse 13 crossover event called CROSSING OVER. It was a lot of fun to write and I had a blast being on set with everyone. I hope to post future EUREKA adventures here, so stay tuned for that. For now, here’s a picture of actress Allison Scagliotti who plays Claudia on Warehouse 13 and I at the 2010 ComicCon in San Diego!

EUREKA’s new season 4.5 airs Monday July 11, 2011 on SyFy at 8 PM! We’ll be followed by WAREHOUSE 13 at 9 PM and the new series ALPHAS at 10 PM! So join us for SyFy Mondays this summer! For more info: http://www.syfy.com/eureka

The Great Deceivers - a King Crimson Tribute band!

I was also busy this week with my band, THE GREAT DECEIVERS. We are a King Crimson tribute band. I joined these amazing musicians in 2009 and have had a blast playing with them ever since. For those of you who don’t know much about KING CRIMSON, they are a very famous and influential prog rock band from the late ’60s onwards who mix everything from classical to rock to heavy metal to New Wave and jazz into a prog rock cocktail. 🙂 They’ve influenced TONS of today’s alt rock bands from Primus to Tool with their innovative sound.

(NOTE: As of Sunday May 15, 2011 at 11:30 AM – this gig has been CANCELLED due to illness.) We’re playing this Sunday May 15 at 4 PM at Alva’s Show Room in San Pedro, CA. For more info, check out our MySpace page here (http://myspace.com/tgdkingcrimson) and on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=101095579478) Gig info here: http://alvasshowroom.com/show_event.php?id=341 Rock on! 🙂

Beethoven the Michigan State Spartan!

Finally, as many of you already know, I am a Crazy Cat Lady to three beautiful kitties – Oreo, Beethoven & Charlotte. Oreo even has his own Twitter page (@oreothecatyoo). LOL! Well, post-NaPiBoWriWee and amidst all my Eureka deadlines and band gig rehearsals, poor Beethoven got sick! Beethoven is the most mischievous cat who loves to climb on top of our refrigerator and even swim in our toilet! LOL! Last Friday, we noticed troublemaker Beethoven was hiding and sleeping too much. He was acting very lethargic and was burning up. We took his temperature – 104.8. That was NOT good because a cat’s normal temperature should be around 101 degrees.

We called the animal ER (the amazing City of Angels Veterinary Specialty Center http://www.cityofangelsvets.com/) and decided we should take Beethoven in. Turns out Beethoven was diagnosed with FUO – Fever of Unknown Origin – which is very common for young cats under 2 years of age. Despite all the tests, the doctors were unable to find out what caused the fever. The poor guy had a fever of 106 for almost two straight days before it went down.

Fortunately, our cat is doing MUCH better, thanks to the animal ER folks and our regular vet (http://www.thepetsvet.com/). Beethoven is back to his sock-and-bra stealing ways, LOL! That’s a whole other story, but Beethoven likes to hide my socks and bras. Apparently other cats have this habit, too: http://www.killmydaynow.com/2010/06/cute-pictures-of-cats-with-bras-37-pics.html/ LOL!

And Beethoven’s sister twin Charlotte hissed at him for a couple days because she did not recognize his smell. Fortunately, that soon ended and now they are back to being cuddle buddy siblings. Awwww.

Cuddle buddy twins Charlotte & Beethoven!

So my Crazy Cat Lady advice to all cat owners – if your cat is acting unusually lethargic, take his temperature. If it is 103 degrees or higher, DEFINITELY take your cat to the vet. For more info on FUOs in cats, go here: http://www.webvet.com/main/2008/06/06/fever-cats

Phew. So this was a long blog but I figured I’d let everyone know what I’ve been up to lately.

Now I’m off to practice my violin for tomorrow’s gig and hopefully get some writing time in, too! I’ll be figuring out a blog schedule for this main blog area, so please keep coming back. You can also check out my homepage at https://paulayoo.com for the weekly YOO INK updates, the Google Calendar events, and your weekly new WRITING TIP.

Until the  next blog, Happy Writing! WRITE LIKE YOU MEAN IT! 🙂
